Permian is supporting and investing in a number of avoided deforestation and ecosystem restoration projects in tropical forests with its partners in Southeast Asia, South America and Africa.

After the initial investment, these projects will become self-sustaining as a result of the income from the carbon credits they generate.

Why Forests?
Forests absorb carbon dioxide; as the trees grow the carbon is stored in the biomass. A mature tropical forest stores substantial amounts of carbon, most of which is released when the trees are destroyed. While carbon dioxide is also 'exhaled' from trees, a forest that is growing and increasing in biomass will always be taking up more carbon dioxide than it releases.

Forests also sustain lives - up to 70% of the world's poorest people rely on forests for foods and medicines, and other non-timber products. Deforestation reduces this natural resource and can create additional environmental hazards such as soil erosion, water pollution, landslides and flooding.

Protecting the remaining forests is vital to reduce the level of carbon emissions and preserve the rich assets of the forests for communities and wildlife alike.
